“…we’re gonna live in an Asia where the big decisions, are gonna be made in our own region, and Australia has to learn to work in that kind of environment” – Prof. Hugh White (ANU)

Professor Hugh White represents a voice of reason and sound judgment in today’s world.

I am pleased to be able to say that I am now mildly optimistic about the future of my country, Australia, based on reports on the recent visit of the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, to China. Some reasonable groundwork has been laid. But it must be backed up by action.

There is no prosperous future for Australia in alignment with the west. For one simple reason. There is no prosperous future visible this side of the horizon for the west itself. Under the heel of a crumbling and dying US, for far too long, that jack-booted heel hiding its own internal decay while feigning friendship and security – which was never (and never could be) there. If only an Australian government could be persuaded to ditch that arrangement entirely (in a friendly way of course, without animosity), some benefit for all would ensue. America could become great again, only be tending to itsa own internal problems and leaving the world to their own devices. All would benefit from that.

And the US is in no position to offer ‘security’ to anyone. A simple look at the numbers and open facts, to see that. Nor can it sustain ‘reserve currency status’ for the dollar for much longer. We are witnessing the end of the Western Empire in these historic times.

But before I get too far into this, here are a few relevant stories from Global Times.

‘Australia has to make its way in an Asia no longer dominated by its allies: Australian professor’ – Global Times – July 18, 2025

‘Australian PM says dialogue with China matters for Australian economy, regional security’ – Global Times – July 18, 2025

‘Chinese FM comments on Australian Prime Minister Albanese’s recent visit to China: ‘consensus on deepening and expanding mutually beneficial cooperation reached” – Global Times – July 21, 2025

‘Australia knows its China relations well, doesn’t need outsiders peddling anxiety’ – Global Times – July 22, 2025

And how is all this being treated in Australian media? Well, it’s kindergarten stuff really (but that is the general level of their reporting)…

‘Albanese rejects criticism of visits to pandas, Great Wall as ‘indulgent’, says China tour was about ‘respect” – ABC news – July 17??, 2025

I won’t say anything about the reaction and meaningless jibes from the government opposition parties. Being about half a century behind the times, their opinions are best left unsaid. And while there is a lot of room for improvement than how the China-Australia situation sits right now, it is vastly improved from the disastrous collapse in the relationship brought about under the previous slimy and vacuous Morrison government.

Australia taking a place as part of Asia – I like that. It’s where we belong. Our true home.
