Having been abused, oppressed, impoverished and belittled by the colonialist powers for centuries, African peoples are also awakening to the fact (which probably not many westerners know either) that who makes the maps can also distort the maps to their own advantage.
Distortion is of course a bi-product of misuse of power. And who are the greatest distortionists of all time? The still powerful but waning Western nations, who delight in deluding themselves about their own importance in this world. Not for much longer, I hope. Things are changing. The West is diminishing – and may eventually disappear, or at least become irrelevant in world affairs.
So, what have they been up to, these last few centuries?
Rigging the world maps to show how important they want the rest of the world to think they are, and how ‘small’ the Global South, including, or especially, Africa is.
Well here are some facts…
The Eurasian land mass is by far the largest continental size contiguous land space on the planet.
The second largest continent is Africa – at around 30.4 Million KM2
The North American continent in its entirety – together with Greenland, will easily fit into Africa. Say What!! [USA is around 9.15 Million KM2; Canada is around 9.09; Mexico is around 1.96; Greenland is around 2.17; Plus a bit more for Central America, the grand total being less than 24 Million KM2]
The whole of South America at around 17.84 Million KM2 could be fit almost twice into Africa.
As could Russia at around 17.01 Million KM2 ]
Almost four Australias will also squeeze into Africa. Australia is around 8.56 Million KM2
Finally, Antarctica at 14.2 Million KM2 is about half the size of Africa.
I hope that list, rough as it is, but as accurate as I want to make it (you can easily check and refine), provides a corresponding view change to something closer to reality.
Please, never belittle Africa, or its peoples, again. Or elevate your own with regard to any other.
