…in my single person household, anyway?
And… there is an election coming up next month.
Well, I guess you do what I always do…
You scribble on your voting paper (never, ever, vote by mail, or electronically), thus rendering it as ‘spoiled’.
Alternatively, you could always face a potential fine by not voting at all. This is Australia we are talking about. Still living, more or less, in the 1950s.
There is no point in voting for any second, third or fourth choice – if there are any – because in a ‘Preference Voting’ system you have to rank all your choices ‘1, 2, 3, 4’ in order of preference to you. Which means you actually have to vote for everybody on the ticket, in order for it to be considered a valid vote. This provides some meaningless warmth to your choice (and avoids the extra cost of multiple rounds of voting), but in the end means that you have necessarily voted for one of the two main contenders, no matter where you ranked them.
It is a system that there can never be any change, other than between the top two contending parties. A system better known as Democracy. Like it or leave it.
Of course it is better then the US system, in that there is no unelected third party known an an ‘Electoral College’, who can at will, swap the positions of the top two around for reasons of their own.
Ok. I suppose I had better say something about why I think my PM is an idiot. Take a look at this…
PM labels Russian push to build military ties with Indonesia ‘propaganda’ – ABC News – April 21, 2025
Unbelievably stupid! Head buried in the sand! …and a number of other choice personal epithets I would prefer to keep to myself.
Is the man a looney? Well he was once a ‘Transport Minister’, a job which eminently qualifies him to run a country. A job he is eminently performing like a myopic 1950s Bus Station manager.
Ah well, I suppose that’s how it pretty much always has been. And now, in a dying West, does it really matter? Elected fools or elected zombies, what’s the difference? They are all still living in the 1950s.
