Friendly Australians are always on the lookout for fresh, new ways to make people feel welcome to our shores – Aren’t we? Well what a great opportunity to show how much we want to extend the hand of friendship to a regional neighbour, our top trading partner, with whom we have enjoyed so strong a friendship in the past. So, what’s all the fuss about?
Welcome them in. Make their visit the sort of enjoyable moment I’m sure they would really enjoy. Who knows what great potential benefits may come from that? You know, like, maybe we don’t actually need over-priced nuclear powered submarines – which are never likely to show up for us to use anyway. And what would we use them for? Who is the enemy? We – good old Australia – friendliest folk on the planet, don’t actually have any enemies. Name one, if you can. Has anyone actually pestered us or caused us harm in the recent past? Like the middle of last century? Who?
And, incidentally, if the same question were asked of ourselves (have we harmed others?), we couldn’t actually answer that in the negative, could we? Let’s be honest. And it wouldn’t be a single lone incident, would it? So let’s not get all high and mighty about our own record, like some do – and with no trace of shame.
There are protocols of course, but all it would take, as a first step, is a call to President Xi (or any other of a dozen or so Presidents I could name) by the appropriate person.
So, once again, what’s all the fuss about? Maybe we should be thinking in terms of our own DOGE and rooting out all the negativity and backward thinking in whatever departments of government are urging all the freaking out over a few ships maneuvering off our shores. Stop the maneuvering, invite them in for goodness sake. They are, and want to be, and will be, our friends.
And, while I am thinking about it, how about a DOGE of our own to examine and investigate those folk we already think of as being our ‘friends’? Are they really? Or are they using us, simple, gullible us, as pansies for their own purposes? Time to ask where do they fit into the global picture? Are they naturally friendly folk? Or are they continually batting heads with other folk? Are they, in fact, friends at all, with anyone, except their own little (and growing littler all the time) exclusive clique.
Nudge-nudge, wink-wink – do we actually need them? Or would we prosper and be far happier (and at ease) among others of like mind to ourselves?
