Summer Snow

This is not a seriously serious post. Well, it is, but it’s not meant to be. And I can’t just let slip past, without comment, an opportunity to demonstrate why we would be foolish (perhaps even are foolish) enough to base our climate thinking on the vagaries of ‘weather’.

A day or two ago I mentioned in a previous post here that it was uncomfortably warm outside, late into the evening here in my home State of Victoria, Australia. Well, it is still Summer here. Spring, at least on the official calendar (who believes that carries any meaning, or ever has?), begins on the first day of next month. Ha! I will leave you to your own considerations on such matters. Another artificial metric for a barely functioning, artificially metricised world.

Well, ‘uncomfortably warm’, in what is generally the hottest month of the year is not at all surprising, but sprung on us locals here, without much warning, the current weekend has produced very cold conditions. Last night being the coldest February night on record (or so the weather commentariat says), with snow falls on regional mountainous areas [that’s the Victorian Alps – where the Aussie Snowfields operate (seasonally, in Winter) and not to be confused with the European ones].

‘Coldest February night on record in parts of Victoria with summer snow in the Alps’ – ABC News [Australia – where Aussie ‘news’ is manufactured (all year round) and not to be confused with the US ones] – Feb 16, 2025

Yes… well… I couldn’t just let that slip past, could I?

What a great example of weather thumbing its nose at climate. Ha-ha-Hah!
