This serious appraisal from Pepe Escobar, a Brazilian journalist who writes a column for Asia Times and also features on several other news outlets, in his situation assessment – ‘A Saigon moment in the Hindu Kush’ – Asia Times – July 7, 2021 – lays bare the inadequacy of the forces of the US “imperial ‘protector’” to safeguard anything, anywhere.
That may come as a surprise (it shouldn’t) to any government also relying on the “imperial ‘protector’” for their own safety and security – viz Australia, for one. The once mighty (in their own minds at least) US military continues its long history of defeats to, on the face of it, inferior forces. Of course, as others have found, the Taliban is not ‘inferior’, on their own territory, in any way to modern military. The fact that the Taliban, in such a short space of time, now ‘own’ 85% of Afghanistan and are in a position to make ‘offers’ to the Afghani government – in order to reduce the impact of potential conflict, makes that very clear.
And so, life goes on. The CIA, will need to find new poppy fields to plunder, and US junkies will need to find a new source for their fixes.
