Open Mind; Closed Mind. Open System; Closed System. Is There an Advantage? How About in AI?

I am no expert in AI, let me state that up front. Although it has been around in rudimentary form in the gaming arena (my favourite passtime*), and possibly in other places, for years. And whatever your views on the subject of AI, its benefits and inherent dangers, it is not going to go away anytime soon

*Passtime is apparently an obsolete spelling of ‘pastime’. But since I am also almost obsolete, I will stick to the old spelling.

AI, the darling tool of the decade, designed at entirely the wrong point in history to have any real hope of longevity (but at the only point in history which could possibly have given birth to it), will eventually pass of course, as all anti-nature ideas conceived by man – like capitalism, sword and shield warfare, or the steam shovel – all do. Because they have outlasted any potential benefit, outrun any essential support mechanisms, or brought to an end the very system which conceived them.

Notwithstanding any of that, AI is here now. And we have to deal with it somehow, knowing of its eventual demise. So, what kind of tool will we make of it? Because, think about it, we can make nothing that is not born of and based on ourselves. And goodness knows we are an imperfect, crooked, corrupt, and despotic people, willing to take whatever advantage we can of and over even other members of our own species and pretty much anything else we can lay hands on. Would you put ‘us’ in charge of any system which has even a modest chance of being cleverer or more evil that we are? And that is just one of the multiple dilemmas we face from our own creative instincts.

Rather than choosing to act jointly as a united species on this latest project, there are already sides being taken over who will dominate the AI space of influence and power. Not good. Not good at all.

Thankfully, although we should not be thankful at all until post effective release effects have been fully analysed, the less aggressive side (China) is developing faster than the poorly intentioned side of the (US). Though these are not the only models being developed. And the latest news is that the developers of the ‘closed’ – as in secretive, dark side, distorted and intentionally misleading or western propagandised – model of the US, have begun increasingly to use in their work efforts the more advanced ‘open’ but still flawed, although much cheaper to run, AI model produced by China. The reasons for that? Well, I can’t offer any specific reasons, but maybe there is a recognition of losing supremacy in the race, or maybe, in its declining years of prosperity and of growing indebtedness, the US is already finding it increasingly difficult to raise the power (electrical power and other resources) necessary to effectively continue along their chosen and exorbitantly expensive pathway. China has no such concerns – for now at least.

Here’s what China’s Global Times has just announced…
