If you have been told, by teachers, government officials, friends, neighbours, or climate activists, that you need to fear what is happening to and within the planet’s climate, do not fear. There is no reason to fear. What you are being told is likely to be lies made up just to scare people everywhere, not only children. And goodness knows, there are already enough grown-ups who have fallen for the lies, when they should know better – but they never learned these things when they were children. You have that opportunity, now.
We live on the planet called Earth. We gave it that name, long ago, and we have been learning all about our home planet ever since. What we have discovered is that the climate has always changed from one set of conditions to another. Usually, in fact always taking millions of years (that’s a long time for the very young), to go from one extreme of climate conditions to another. Nothing measurable happens within a few decades (a decade is ten years). And nothing important or even measurable has happened since Australia became a country in 1901, nor since the first European colonies began to form in the late 1700s.
How do we know that? Because we keep records of various aspects of weather. Both from modern times – where we can use sophisticated instruments, including some based on satellites circling the planet, and from very ancient times. Up to 500,000,000 – that’s 500 million or half a billion, years in the past. So we can see what climate changes have occurred, with reasonable accuracy, over the whole of that time. Particularly variations in temperature, the levels of ocean waters, and the coming and going of ice in the colder regions of the world. Which are the main features of climate change.
I can tell you this about what we know, from all the scientific endeavours of the past, There is nothing unusual about the world climate we have today, when viewed in the light of all those recorded data facts.
So, why is there so much panic (yes, panic!) among certain groups of people today, if we already know there is no reason for panic? Well, that is really something you will learn as you continue your education, but I can say that it is mostly down to greedy men who see opportunities – all kinds of opportunities – but particularly in cases where thay can see a chance to make more money. Which for these people, is the main driver of their work. Never giving a care about what that may mean to other people or what harm it could cause. I will say no more on that, but you need to know that is the basic fact behind all the fuss. And it will hurt you, causing you worry and concern about conditions when you are grown to be adults.
All I can tell you is that there is nothing to fear from climate, nor from the suggested activities of these bad men who make unworkable plans to ‘fight’ climate. They can do nothing to alter the way the planet has performed, from long before there were humans living here. The planet will go on doing just what it has done from time before memory. And following exactly the same routine as it always has done. Interrupted only from time to time by cosmic events like comet approaches and meteor impacts. Human activity does not even register in that.
I can also tell you, as a kind of reassurance for any concern you may still have, that there has never been a time where the planet, across its Tropical regions either side of the Equator, have not been suitable for comfortable living by humans. And that is roughly a third of the planet’s surface. Enough room for all, even at times of both the hottest or coldest of climate periods. The Tropical regions never vary much in temperature range or weather effects outside of the normal yearly cycles.
But none of that should concern you anyway. Changes in climate will remain barely measurable for thousands of generations of humanity – as it always has been. You will begin to question the validity of the current climate nonsense as years go by with no bad or terrifying effects appearing to bother us.
