Did You Know?…

Moving away from my usual pet subjects (they are pet subjects for a reason, of course), here is something that a great many people may not know about, or may only have scant details about. I have to admit that while I was aware of the matter, I also did not possess all the detail provided by this video, nor realise the full extent of the geology behind it.

Australia has a large underground sea, covering or actually beneath the cover of much of the Eastern half of that continent (which is much the same size as mainland USA), the hidden watercourse (seemingly, it does actually flow, though very slowly) is known as the Great Artesian Basin. It really is fascinating stuff and this video, if you can understand the narrated Australian accent, reveals some interesting facts about it. This is, by the way, one of the main reasons that ‘Fracking’ should not be allowed in Australia, due to risk of contamination, since the country is riddled with such aquifers. Unfortunately successive governments do not agree, seeing the world only in terms of dollars.

There is a companion video from the same OzGeology stable, the link is in the first pinned comment on the Youtube page for this one.
