Whether this is his own idea, or was suggested to him by his advisors, it is a quite brilliant solution for ending the Ukraine crisis. Has it become a crisis? Well it is for Ukraine, and also for many Western nations. And the issue will never be concluded while ever the Zelensky government remains illegally in power – no matter how hard Trump pushes. Russia is not prepared to end the conflict on any other basis, except for their own military removal of Zelensky through a process of capitulation. And, it is significant that Trump has not so far raised this admirable solution himself.

I feel sure that the UN – there being multiple precedents for the move – would agree to this. Although it may also be significant that they have not raised the possibility themselves. Perhaps they have to be requested to take action. But by whom?

In my opinion, and in the current circumstances, such UN action will provide the only possibility for peace to ensue. But whatever governance replaces the evil Zelensky regime, it will still need to accept, activate, and make arrangements to complete the whole concept package of all Russia’s demands.
There is one drawback to this. The UN would need to have a policing force, within Ukraine, large enough to disarm the whole Ukraine military while holding at bay the hordes of nazi sympathisers (if any such there are remaining) from interfering. Russia is not going to allow a useless and belligerent NATO contingent to enter or control the country while all this is proceeding. And, conversely, the west is not going to accept Russia taking on the role in circumstances other than that the Ukraine military has already been completely defeated and disarmed. Russia believes such a situation to be imminent anyway, and I think there is little reason to doubt them on that.
This aside, and also resolved, the UN move would,in fact, be an admirable solution because it would also deprive both Trump and the US of the prestige, fame, and glory, they would undoubtedly accrete to themselves from being major or sole organising entity to the deal. And that is no small matter.
