Beware the Ides of March

On the 14th of March, tomorrow as I write, there will be a Full Moon – with all the implications which have grown over the years with such phenomena. But this particular Full Moon, is what once marked the beginning of the Roman Lunar calendar. But you can’t attach important events to phases of the Moon since they are calendrically irregular, and anyway, the calendar itself was changed eventually. So, in the end, ‘the Ides’ was assigned to the 13th day in some months, the 15th in others (including March).

Typifying the modern recollections of the feature is of course the back-stabbing of Julius, Caesar of Rome by, I think, Senator Brutus and others. Brutus minted the commemorative coin in the image at right, complete with daggers and a ‘cap of freedom’. The Romans of those times were obviously just as mixed up ideologically, as those whose national pursuits today are based on those of ancient Rome …and will likely share the same eventual fate. Will it be those whom they refer to as ‘barbarians’ today – actually perhaps the most cultured of current races – who deliver the final ‘Coup de Grâce’?

Current circumstances are actually set up for a repeat performance, don’t you think? Intrigue upon intrigue. Deception upon deception. Greed upon greed. Barbarity upon barbarity. False alliance upon false alliance. False democracy upon false democracy …and inflated ego upon inflated ego.

I feel sure something is going to happen around about now. It is fate upon fate.
