No Obvious Rapprochement After Riyadh Meeting

Those are the reported words of Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov following the high level meeting between Russian and US officials – to which he was a part of the Russian delegation. Although it is inferred from what he said that ‘both sides have agreed to take into account each other’s interests’.

I kind of thought that was somehow the best which could have been expected as an outcome of this little get together. There will be a retreat to respective corners now, to mull over initial expectations, in readiness for a Round 2 – for which, I believe, no dates have so far been set. That has to be taken as a positive. Only one of the sides, facing now the reality as presented to them – face to face – will need to adjust their position. The other side does not need to do that, and in fact must not entertain any such idea.

So, while you may have heard other rumours, from other sources, of some kind of plan structure to end the conflict being developed between the two sides, such thoughts are entirely fictional at this stage.
