‘AI’s Sputnik moment’: China-based DeepSeek’s open-source models may be a real threat to the dominance of OpenAI, Meta, and Nvidia – Andy Edser – PCGamer – Jan 28, 2025
Ok, permit me one comment. This is without a doubt a huge blow to US domination in this field, providing, as it does, the gift of free, open-source software, to the world.
Addendum: Global Times reports huge waves of DDos attacks against DeepSeek since early January, peaking Tuesday, Jan 28 and necessitating a locking of new registrations from outside China. However, I was able to register for the product yesterday from Australia on my tablet device (itself a Chinese product which now has to double as a phone since Australia dropped 3G coverage last October, causing most overseas purchased smart phones to no longer work in the country). Registration was easily accomplished by using my Google account as identity source. So I guess those restrictions have been eased now.
