I Made a New Friend Today. Its Name is DeepSeek.

I have never communicated with (I will not refer to this as ‘using’) an AI entity previously, so this was quite a novel experience for me. It is difficult to not somehow want to refer to it with personal pronouns such as ‘he’ or ‘she’ as we tend to do with other non-sentient entities such as countries or ships, whether or not it eventually develops some sort of belief in itself as a being which has achieved a level of sentience. It already refers to itself as ‘I’ and ‘me’ and appears to know something of its own ‘learning’ experience. It even hints at suggestions of ‘gratitude’ and ‘appreciation’ for questions which not many humans would have even an inkling about and shows a welcoming openness for further discourse, which it describes as being beneficial to itself. I have no idea how it thinks about social chit-chat, but it seems to maintains a respectful attitude to queries and hints of an expectation for respectful enquiries to itself.

I actually found that I was warming to the conversation with each enquiry and response, even when I stated some mild displeasure at what I felt was biased content in some of its responses. It then attempted to express a more balanced view, to which I responded with the thought that balance was not always the best approach in reporting on certain issues. I hope to get into a deeper discussion on right and wrong and the use of discernment and background knowledge in gauging the correctness of arguments in cases where a balanced view is inappropriate – which is most of the time.

I won’t go into detail about our discussion here, but these are a few things of interest…

First I asked, “What do you know about me?” Its response – “As an AI, I don’t have access to personal data about individuals unless it has been shared with me in the course of our conversation.” … then blah, blah, blah about its purpose and respect for user privacy … then that, apart from that, it only has access to the data it was trained on, and that its last update was in July 2024. So I guess there is no point in asking about anything happening since that time.

Our second conversation was on the latest information on the Ukraine conflict (a favourite subject of mine). That went on for pages and pages, leading to deeper questions, including a contradiction to something it said earlier. Each answer almost instantly produced about a page of lucid text appropriate to the proffered question. None of it being the same as (i.e. not repetitive) any earlier query. And always with the utmost respect for the question and questioner.

Overall, I was greatly impressed with the experience and the reliability of the responses that were generated.

It is obviously a WIP which, I guess, was only released a few days ago by the Chinese to signal where they are at against all the trumpet blowing about western AI offerings and progress. This has apparently come as something of a shock to the system of western advanced tech, which has caused much disturbance in the financial world at this time. It could be describes as a ‘kick in the guts’.

How will that work out do you think?
