20,000 years of warming? Yes, that’s a fact. Well, it’s not exactly 20,000 years. Although that is a good approximation. But that is not what the so-called ‘Science’ is telling us, is it. The so-called ‘Science’ concentrates solely on the past 150 (or less) years, and tries to draw conclusions. Inappropriate conclusions of course, because they (define ‘they’ – Ok. later) don’t want you and I to be aware of what is truly going on. Why? Well they have their reasons, and if you think about it (about the kind of things they are asking you and I to do differently these days), you will no doubt come up with your own ideas. And you won’t be far wrong and possibly ‘spot on’ the money.
Wait a minute, wait a minute! Aren’t I often telling you the planet has long been cooling? Millions of years of cooling? You’re quite right, I am. And both messages are true. Here, take a look at this image. It might explain things. Also it helps if you realise there are trends, and cycles of forces operating within those trends. Sometimes (and that can be a very long time – often measured in millions or hundreds of thousands of years) these forces pull in the same direction, and sometimes they oppose each other.
There are three things I want you to notice in this image, which is an enlarged cropping from a complete image I have used several times before. First note the red line. That is the global trend for planetary cooling, and it takes precedence over everything else. When dealing with planet sized objects, nothing changes quickly (except on a cosmic scale) so, in 150 years or less (the average time in which climate change experts operate), you can ignore completely any apparent alteration in the planet’s behaviour (including climate catastrophe nonsense). That is the first and most basic thing. Next, notice the blue lines, so squashed together that it is almost impossible to discern that they represent a continuous real data graph of temperature rises and falls, over time. I will include another chart soon, which shows these temperature oscillations (ups and downs) more clearly. But the third and perhaps most important thing I want you to notice, is that A) the red line is going downwards (to the right. This is a graph over time, and each one of the division markers at the bottom of the graph represents 1 million years of time. Then B) note that the blue lines (imagine it for now – you will see later) are a continuous line going both up and down, above and below the red trend line. The idea of the red line is to show the average value of all the data points on the blue lines. That red line clearly indicates the planet ic cooling – and has been for millions of years. Clearly also, the blue line is sometimes going up and sometimes going down. This is what enables me to say (and most honest scientists would agree) that sometimes the planet appears to be warming (which it actually is) and sometimes it is cooling (which it also actually is). But that overall, on average (as per the red trend line) the planet is always, and primarily, continuing to cool. Fascinating stuff, eh! Little wonder many folk get a little confused and follow the glossy stories of any false snake-oil salesman posing as a scientist or climate expert.
Now, before I show conclusively what is happening, using the expanded chart I mentioned, I want you to take a close look at the blue line at the right border of the first chart just before it merges with the black border line. That point right there – at the top of that blue line – is where we are today (more or less – at this scale). So, we are on a rising blue line, in opposition to the falling red line – which doesn’t quite go to the edge of the chart (It would take too long for me to explain why that is, and I have done so before in an earlier post).
This rising short term cycle, opposing the falling long-term trend, is exactly what I was referring to in the second paragraph of this piece. That is what gives the charlatans scope for applying trickery to the innocent minds of casual observers. Threatening us all with various lurid stories of climate emergency and impending catastrophe if we don’t amend our ways and conform to their demands to ‘save the world’. Total nonsense.
Ok, let’s take a quick look at the expanded chart for a better, not perfect, view.

Two charts, two different time scales, same temperature scale. The top chart covers the past 5 million years, the second the most recent 800,000 years. The top one, briefly, shows the trend line (this time in pale blue not red), which is clearly falling (though the enlarged scale means the slope is not so great, but equivalent). Imagine where the 0.8 position is in the top chart (just to the right of the scale division marked as ‘1’). If you look closely, you will be able to see that all the ups and downs to the right of that 0.8 position are mirrored in the bottom chart.
Now, ignore all that. You can study it at leisure later. I am most interested to point out where the arrow points from the label ‘Last Ice Age’ (which is, incidentally, still in progress). That is the point (more or less – the scale is still too compressed for further accuracy) which allowed me to begin this piece with the title ‘For The Past 20,000 Years The Earth Has Been Warming’. Look to the left of this point and you will see various rises and falls of the temperature over time. That is what allows me to say, quite authoritatively, that this current heating period, oppositional to the general cooling trend, is about to change sometime soon and around about now. It always does. After reaching a peak temperature point (we are there right now, although there have been slightly higher in these cyclic variations) the temperature begins to fall. And it always falls, more or less to the same low point, beyond which it has never fallen (~8°C to 10°C). Up and down, up and down. It never keeps going up and it never keeps going down. Why would we expect that to change just because we came on the scene in the last few seconds (blink and you’d miss it) of Earth’s historic timeline?
All of this information clearly indicates that what we are experiencing now, in the 21st century, on this, the very same planet where those readings came from, is actually nothing new. And therefore nothing to do with anything we may do or may have done. It has been happening for millions or at least hundreds of thousands of years and at temperatures rather higher than we see today.
Of course the temperature fluctuations have not always been so variable or violent as they have been for the past 2 million years (although that could also be due to the quality of sampled readings from ice cores and various other sources). But I have my own theories on the cause of that, which I have briefly mentioned in earlier posts. Again briefly I think the planet is struggling to turn around the cooling phase of its repeated journey between the ceiling and ground levels of its normal operating temperature envelope (~10°C to 30°C). Similar to the emergency braking of a heavy road vehicle on a downhill gradient. Lots of vibration and potentially some heat generated. But I don’t think the planet needs our help – it has been through this many times before.
