Just announced, is a BRICS joint decision to take a pause in accepting new members into the group to allow a firming up of standards and expectations. The west may see this as cause to gloat and speculate, in their own juvenile way, but it is nothing of the sort.
With a list of around 40 more nations, across a broad spectrum of readiness and applicability to take up expressing a desire to join the group through to actually making an application to do so, any such casting of doubt as to the future of the group is ridiculous. Not only must new applicants meet the approval of all current members (the requirements for which may not have become settled as yet), but it is apparently also seen necessary to set a staged route to the attainment of full membership. I think the example of Argentina – obviously not fully ready a year ago – pulling out at the last moment, is not something the group wants to see repeated. This is the sensible and adult method of approach. It will save much heartache in the future.
I don’t know what the plans are, no doubt to be unveiled at the upcoming Annual Summit in October, but the reliable Lena Petrova has more information on this emerging story, although the headline could have been more tastefully phrased…
