Dealings in Croatia

I thought I would quickly add this to follow up on the embarrassing recent Swiss Summit.

‘Ukraine’s top diplomat discusses ways to resolve crisis with Chinese envoy in Croatia’ – TASS – June 29, 2024

Is this a feasible direction for discussions on Ukraine to go? Well, yes, entirely feasible. Russia can’t talk to Ukraine. Ukraine doesn’t yet want them to do that. But to talk to China, as a go-between, that I think is fine, and actually valuable. Because China fully understands Russia’s position – and the only deal it will accept. And China, I think, more or less agrees with that position and will therefore not bullshit Ukraine’s representatives. The direct opposite to what any western potential go-between undoubtedly would do. These discussions therefore have a chance of some success. At least Ukraine will know for sure what is expected of them. And, I’m sure Russia will make some accommodations – where it can – within the laws governing war crimes prosecutions – for some Ukrainian officials who are deemed not to have offended greatly. That is only my assumption of course.

An interesting development which I doubt will receive much attention outside of those closely involved.
