Last Thursday, March 28, Russia used its power of veto at the UN Security Council, the effect of which is to bring to an end the UN Panel of Experts (PoE), which monitors UN member states’ enforcement of the UN sanctions regime on North Korea. The following story from the CSIS, a distinctly west leaning organisation fleshes out – albeit in a west leaning way of course, the effects of that perhaps unexpected move by Russia which has, in the past, supported the work of the panel. But things change.
It appears that Russia has now had enough of rough treatment at the UN for itself and other nations which are subject to unfair UN Resolution enforced sanctions. I applaud that decision.
‘Russia’s Veto: Dismembering the UN Sanctions Regime on North Korea’ – CSIS – March 29, 2024
Although it is part of her job, I am very happy to see Russian MFA Spokesperson Maria Zakharova coming out strongly in support of the veto decision. Her explanation makes complete sense. Here is the important part, as reported by TASS…
The goal of the operation of the group of experts, which cannot be called independent and unbiased, was not to uphold international and regional security, but to compromise Pyongyang and to discredit DPRK’s friends. The UN has been unable to properly research the scale of the strike that the UN Security Council sanctions inflict on common people directly or indirectly. The issue of illegal unilateral coercion measures traditionally remained a taboo.
On our side, we have examined the expert requests scrupulously, and we can say with certainty that most of them had no solid ground. However, not all threat (sic. ‘treat’) the interaction with the experts as diligently. Otherwise, it could have long been possible to reveal and eliminate the channels of weapons smuggling to Haiti. We expect that the story involving the expert group on DPRK will be a good lesson, and the UN will start getting rid of its dependence on its American puppeteers.
Russia cannot stand idly by when UN sanctions become indiscriminate weapon — diplomat – TASS – March 30, 2024
It has to be said, and no-one has directly said it – although Maria gave a veiled hint – that UN imposed sanctions, which are directed mostly at non-west nations, are pretty much universally introduced by the US, with applied coercion on many UN member nation states to consent. It’s elsewhere called racketeering.
So, of course, western reaction is a duty bound typification of their lax morals and loose, unhinged, thinking in support of their US overlords.
Soon, very soon, I think, the west will find itself with very much less global influence, respect and power on the international stage. The ball is rolling, and it’s a downhill slope.
