“The exercise of the strategic deterrence forces was planned earlier to check the readiness of military command bodies, launch crews, crews of warships and strategic missile carriers to perform their tasks, as well as the reliability of weapons of strategic nuclear and non — nuclear forces,” the report says.
Ok. Move on. Nothing to see here. It is pre-planned and it is a readiness exercise. The military of all countries plan exercises all the time.
Yes, of course this is slightly different. The militaries of most nations do not have a nuclear triad to periodically put through readiness training – at least, openly. But I am confident that this simply a training exercise. The timing of it, of course, will have had some pre-thought planning, and I doubt there is no connection between this exercise, the Russian exercises near Russia’s western borders (some of which are now ending), and the timing of the Russian demands on security guarantees – the negative responses to which, from the west, would have been entirely expected. All of these things are designed, I have no doubt, to demonstrate the seriousness of Russia’s stated position. And that is something the west has yet to demonstrate any even small amount of understanding around. They are too concerned with their own self-image to take Russia seriously. Maybe this exercise will be a turning point – but I doubt it. There will be much biblical weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth, together with copious amounts of media vitriol over this ‘new’ issue – which they will consider a news bonanza, no doubt. But they are just too stupid to recognise how much danger they are in right now.
This TASS report may add some weight to the occasion. President Putin will be on site for the exercise – as he must as national leader – to give the order to fire the missiles (yes they will be using real missiles – I don’t think that is too much to assume). It is not known yet if Belorussian President Lukashenko will be there with him but he is in-country just now, for talks.

I will add just one more thought to this. Russia has drawn up its response to the west’s rejection of Russia’s security demands, but has not yet delivered the information to those concerned (I don’t think what was released today counts as the Russian response. It may be a summary, but not the actual thing, which will no doubt quickly follow this event – while the memory is still strong).
