The Sea of Azov, where only a few days ago Ukraine was planning a seaborne landing behind the DPR front line using US supplied boats, is no longer accessible to the Ukraine armed forces, with the surrounding of possibly brigade sized units holding on to Mariupol finally completed by the joining of the DPR forces from the east with the Russian troops out of Crimea from the west.
‘Ring line: troops of the republics of Donbass and Russia blocked Mariupol‘ – Izvestia News – March 2, 2022, 00: 30
The whole Ukraine group to the east of the Dnieper river, consisting of some 12 brigades, of which one is now isolated in Mariupol, is itself about to be completely surrounded by Russian forces in the next day or so. It is also now leaderless (as well as being incommunicado – Russian EW units presumably blocking all communications), its HQ ‘Combat Group North’ having yesterday been destroyed. Here is what Izvestia has to say on that…
According to the deputy head of the People’s Militia Department of the Republic Eduard Basurin, the commander of the North group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Brigadier General Dmitry Krasilnikov, and many officers of his staff were killed. In addition, according to him, the commander of the Vostok group, Lieutenant General Yuri Sodol, was seriously wounded and the commander of the 53rd brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Dmitry Titenko, was killed.
According to Basurin, after that, the nationalist units in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions were left without control.

There are no details as to exactly where that HQ was located or even when the attack occurred, but these facts may indicate why a major part of the Ukraine army (some of its best trained and equipped units) have not disentangled themselves from what will soon mean their death or surrender – they never received orders to move and they had no senior officers capable of issuing such orders. What a triumph for Russia and the Donbass republics, and what a disgrace for the Ukraine military. Although it won’t be the first time they have been surrounded and destroyed. It occurred in 2014 in roughly the same location, by the same Donbass republics before they even legitimised themselves and were simply a separatist militia. And that is how they obtained most of their military hardware I believe. Not that the west ever reported such an event – but it is recorded for history.
And, by the way, General Krasilnikov has been awarded the Hero of Ukraine medal by Zelensky … https://24tv.ua/ru/zelenskij-dal-geroja-ukrainy-komandujushhemu-otg-sever-dmitriju_n1884533 – I don’t advise clicking on that link.
There is a lot of useful information in the Izvestia article I first quoted. I haven’t read all of it – just don’t have the time.
Anyway, to conclude, things are going well for the Russian offensive and the Donbass republics must be very excited and thankful that they are going to restore the whole of their territory to their control very soon – under the protection of Russia. I am sure they will prosper there.
There is even news, though it is very flimsy at the moment, in the latest Saker report for Day 6. It appears that Russian forces have broken out from both the north and south to begin encircling the whole of the western regions south of Kiev, thus trapping whatever remains of the Ukrainian army…
‘Day 6, a couple of quick points’ – the Saker blog
Western forces, grumbling and pacing nervously in the background, had better think twice before committing troops to assist Ukraine in any death or glory adventure there.
